  • koalas belongs to the class mammalia and the subclass marsupialia. The order is diprotodontia and suborder vombatiformes.
  • From phylogenic point of view, koalas belongs to the marsupial mammals of the family phascolarctidae.
  • The main trait of marsupial is the presence of the pouch. A marsupial climbs to the pouch from the birth canal or the flap of the skin as in embryonic stage. Marsupials do not have a true placenta that is the reason why the embryo gets attached to the pouch.

  • The native place of koala is the forests and woodlands of the Eastern Australia.
  • The main food sources for koala is the Eucalyptus leaves ( Gum leaves).
  • Koalas are basically sedentary animals. They are nocturnal. They usually sleep upto 20 hours a day to digests their food.
  • Koalas sometimes travel on the ground when necessary. But the main disadvantage is that predators could catch the koalas very easily when in ground. The main shelter, food and home for the koalas is the eucalyptus trees.
