Non-Verbal communication is a kind of communication method without using spoken language.Example for some of the Non-verbal communication techniques are shaking hands, patting on the back, hugging, pushing or other kind of touch, facial expressions, gestures and eye contact. The Non-verbal communication techniques are often used either alone or with verbal communication depends on the situations, to make the communication effective and to meet the needs.Non-verbal communication complements or substitute a verbal message, help illeterate and handicapped people to convey the ideas, reduces wastage of time as it reaches the receiver very fast. Also communication by using visual, picture, graph, sign and symbol can be seen very much attractive and strike much easily. However, Non-verbal communication has some disadvantages too. Unlike verbal language, Non-verbal communication doesnt have a defined structure.Long conversations are not possible as certain complex and serious ideas cannot be communicated through gestures and facial expression.Sometimes non-verbal communication can cause misleading too. Also gestures seen as positive in one culture may be seen obscene in another culture, so people from entirely different culture cant rely on non-verbal communication to an extend. For example, thumbs up is widely recognised sign of approval in the US is actually used as an insult in Bangladesh. To conclude, Non-verbal techniques can either contribute to a successful communication or end up in broken, ineffective or misleading one. All you need to do is develop the communication skills by pay attention to Eye contact,Facial expressions, space(distance between you and receiver),touch,Posture and tones of sounds.
