Choose a human virus (not HIV or Flu) that causes permanent and long lasting symptoms. Create a comprehensive presentation (2-3 paragraphs) including at least the following:
Describe the virus agent- what does it look like? Include an image if possible.
Describe how the virus enters the body (if it enters)
Describe the affects of the virus.
Describe the signs and symptoms of the virus.
What are the long-lasting affects of the virus?
Please no handwritten or picture responses - only typed answers.
HEPATITIS B
Hepatitis B is a viral infection of the liver caused by hepatitis B virus which causes long lasting symptoms(here long lasting symptoms means CHRONIC - Symptoms lasting more than 3 months).
CAUSATIVE AGENT:( Virus agent and what does it look like)
Hepatitis B is a human virus with double stranded DNA belonging to the member of HEPADNAVIRIDAE. The shape of the virus is icosahedral. In the core of the virus there is a genetic material (DNA) and the enzyme DNA polymerase, which is surrounded by a protein shell. Then the entire virus is surrounded by envelope. The protein shell of hepatitis B virus is unique that carries hepatitis B core antigen.
MODE OF TRANSMISSION:( How virus enters the body)
Hepatitis B is a blood borne virus transmitted through infected blood from one person to another. It also enters the body from an infected mother to a newborn child. Like HIV virus it is also transmitted through blood products and other body fluids.EXAMPLE: SALIVA, SEMEN, SWEAT, SHARING NEEDLES WITH INFECTED BLOOD. Kissing, sneezing, coughing, cause hepatitis B through naso-oral route( through nose and mouth). Sex practices with infected persons causes hepatitis B through genital route.(through sex organs).
SIGNS AND SYMTOMS:
Symtoms means patient describing. example fever
signs means physician finds in patients. example jaundice through tests or scans
1) Fever
2) Joint pain
3) Fatigue( weakness)
4) Abdominal pain
5) Loss of appetite
6) Dark urine
7) Vomiting
8) Jaundice( yellowing of skin and eyes)
9) Nausea
LONG LASTING SYMPTOMS (OR) COMPLICATIONS:
1) Liver cirrosis(damage to the liver or scarring)
2) Liver cancer
3) Liver failure
4) Also develop kidney diseases and inflamation of blood vessels.
virus mainly affects the liver and if untreated it causes long lasting symptoms.
