UTI/Urinary tract infection on a reflective journal
Urinary Tract Infection(UTI) is an infection of urinary tract caused by entry of microorganism. There are two types of UTI: cystitis and pyelonephritis. Cystitis is infection of urinary bladder whereas pyelonephritis is infection beyond the bladder that is advancement of infection in kidney if left untreated. Cystitis is the most common type of UTI.
UTI affects women more as compared to men. The causative organisms are E.Coli, staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella etc. UTI occurs more frequently as the person is advanced in age. So, the risk factors includes old age, long standing urination, indwelling catheter, previous history of UTI, poor hygiene, nosocomial infection. Person with UTI experience sign and symptoms like burning micturition, flank Pain, fever with chills, fatigue, urinary frequency, incontinence, urgency, suprapubic pain, concentrated urine, foul odor of urine. Several investigations is carried out to find out the exact causes of infection, they include routine urine test, urine culture, complete blood count, ultrasound.
It is the most significant cause of morbidly in all age groups due to lifestyle changes. Severity depends on its causes and types. Treatment of UTI starts with a course of antibiotics after finding causative organisms via culture report, some of the common antibiotics prescribed are Nitrofurantoin, Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Other medications are also adviced to take like anti-inflammatory, antipyretic.
Health education regarding prevention of UTI is important. Health care team should instruct the patient to maintain proper hygiene like cleaning the perineal area after each void, keeping body hydrated, drink cranberry juice, tender coconut, healthy diet, proper sanitation, catheter care. Complications of UTI includes recurrent UTIs, kidney damage, chronic kidney infection, calculi.
