1/ Think about each of the following situations, then explain
each patient’s behavior.
a. Mrs. M. has a private room. Her gown
appears very expensive and there are luxury cosmetic items on her
dresser. She is hospitalized for diagnostic purposes. After the
second day, she appears to lack interest in grooming. Her hair is
uncombed and she has not applied any make-up.
b. Johnny is admitted through the clinic
for a tonsillectomy. When the phlebotomist tries to draw a blood
sample, Johnny kicks and screams. When he is being prepared for the
operating room, a string with a small bag attached is
found around his neck. He tries to prevent this from being removed,
saying he will die if he is not allowed to wear it to the operating
room.
2/ List five differences between the health care provider/patient
relationship and the friend-to-friend relationship.
1. a. Hospitalizaion is stresful for the clients, where the patients need support from their famiy and health professionals inorder to cope up with the disease. In this case, the client is exhibiting symptoms of ineffective coping related to situational crisis due to inadequate level of confidence in ability to cope as evidneced by lack of interest in self-care, poor grooming etc.
Adaptive mechanisms are necessary to appropriately alter one's lifestyle, deal with chronicity of illness and integrate precscribed therapies into daily living
1b. This client is anxious about the surgery due to lack of knowledge regarding the condition, treatment , self care and discharge needs. That is the reason why client exhibits inappropriate, exaggerated behaviors(agitated, apathic, hostile)
This situation arises because of lack of proper pre-operative teaching. Proper teaching provides knowledge base from which client can make informed therapy choices and consent appropriate for correct procedure and site . It also provides opportunity to clarify misconception. Inaddition, it enhances client's understanding and control relieve stress related to unknown or unexpected
