In an online Human Computer Interaction (HCI) lecture, the lecturer mentioned that there are many rules that have been created to guide computer software programmers as well as hardware designers. He mentioned “ben Shneiderman’s eight golden rules” as one of such guidelines, and went on to explain each rule to the class using real life examples. As a teaching assistant in the IT department in Wisconsin international university college Ghana the HCI lecturer have asked you to teach his next class the following guidelines:

i. Interface Design Guidelines,

ii. guidelines for Information Display In not less than 100 words and in your own words describe, using any application software of your choice, each of the rules in the guidelines listed above stating how they were applied.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer:-

i)

  • Users should always be informed of system operations with easy to understand and highly visible status displayed on the screen
  • Designers should attempt to mirror the language and construct user would find in the real world based on who their target user are
  • Offer users a digital place where backward steps are possible, including undoing and redoing previous actions
  • Interface designers should ensure that both the graphic elements and nomenclature are maintained across similar platforms
  • Whenever possible, design systems so that potential errors are kept to a minimum
  • With increased use comes the demand for less interactions that allow faster navigation

ii)

  • Exhibit only that information that is applicable to the present context.
  • Don't burden the user with data, use a presentation layout that allows rapid integration of information
  • Use standard labels, standard abbreviations and probable colors
  • Permit the user to maintain visual context
  • Use analog displays to characterize information that is more easily integrated with this form of representation
  • Consider the available geography of the display screen and use it efficiently
