  1. In cucumbers, orange fruit color (R) is dominant over cream fruit color (r). A cucumber plant homozygous for orange fruit is crossed with a plant homozygous for cream fruit. The F1 are intercrossed to produce the F2.

    1. Give the genotypes and phenotypes of the parents, the F1, and the F2.

    2. Give the genotypes and phenotypes of the offspring of a backcross between

      the F1 and the orange-fruited parent.

    3. Give the genotypes and phenotypes of a backcross between the F1 and the

      cream-fruited parent.

Solutions

Expert Solution

R is dominant allele and r is recessive

So parent homozygous for orange fruit colour will be = RR

AND Parent homozygous for cream fruit colour will be = rr

In F1 generation phenotype of all will be = Orange fruit colour.

In F1 generation genotype of all will be Rr (hetrozygous).

In F2 generation :

Phenotype ----- 3 orange : 1 cream. Or 3 : 1

Genotype -------1 RR : 2 Rr : 1 rr. or 1: 2 : 1

In the backcross between F1 and orange fruited parent.

The offsprings will be :

Phenotype = All orange

Genotype = 2RR : 2Rr or 2:2

In a backcross between offspring in F1 and Cream fruited parent will be as above .

Phenotype = 2 Orange : 2 Cream. or 2 : 2

Genotype = 2 Rr : 2 rr. Or 2 : 2

In tomatoes, yellow flowers (Wf) are dominant over white flowers (wf), and yellow fruit (r) are recessive to red fruit (R). A cross was made between true-breeding plants with yellow flowers and yellow fruit, and plants with white flowers and red fruit. The F1 generation plants were then crossed to plants with white flowers and yellow fruit. The following results were obtained: 75 white flowers, red fruit 205 white flowers, yellow fruit 216 yellow flowers, red fruit 37 yellow flowers,...

In Triskelian cats, in the Blondish Galaxy, black coat color is dominant over grey. Coat color is determined by a single autosomal gene with two alleles: B = black coat color; b = grey coat color. The autosomal gene for eye color is hypothesized to assort independently from the gene for coat color. The two alleles are: R = green eye color; r = blue eye color.
