Question 1

Yellow seed color is dominant to green seed color. A green seeded plant is crossed with a heterozygous plant. What phenotypic and genotypic ratios would you predict in the offspring? If I planted 200 of these offspring, how many would be green? How many would be yellow? Explain how you solved the problem.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Given ,: Yellow seed colour is dominant over green seed colour.

A green seaded plant is crossed with heterozygous plant.

Let ;

Allele Y = Yellow seed colour - dominant allele.

Allele y = green seed colour - recessive

Since we know that recessive trait is only expressed in homozygous condition.

Therefore , genotype of given green seeded plant = yy

And genotype of heterozygous plant= Yy

Let cross them :-

P1:- Yy. X. yy

F1:-

Gametes Y y
y Yy yy
y Yy yy

Genotypic ratio : 2(Yy):2(yy)

Phenotypic ratio :- 2(Yellow seeded):2(green seeded)

If you planted 200 of this offspring then 100 would be Yellow seeded and 100 would be green seeded.

In peas, yellow seed pod (Y) is dominant to green seed pod (y), and inflated seed pod (N) is dominant to constricted seed pod (n). These two loci are NOT linked. A true-breeding pea plant with yellow, inflated pods is crossed to a true-breeding plant with green, constricted pods. The F1 progeny are self-fertilized. What is the probability of obtaining a plant that produces yellow, constricted seed pods in the F2?

You are studying a plant whose seed shape (round, disc or elongated) and seed color (yellow, green grey) are determined by two different gene loci. The R/r locus controls seed shape and the Y/y locus control seed color. Pod characteristics are effected by a number if genes. Pod color (green dominant to yellow), pod surface (rough is recessive to smooth), and pod width (wide is dominant to narrow). Pod color and pod surface are 10 map units away. True breeding plants with green, wide, and smooth were mated with yellow, narrow, and rough. This plant was test crossed. If 1000 testcross progeny were examined, how many are expected to have yellow, wide, and rough pods?
