The NMBA regulates the practice of nursing and midwifery in Australia. Its key role is to protect the public. This also focus on developing standards, codes and guidelines for the professional and safe practice of nurses and midwives in Australia. The code focus on nursing practice that it is not restricted on direct clinical care,it also extend to non clinical relationship with clients working in management, administration, education, leadership,etc.
Code of conduct 3.2 says about culturally safe and respectful practice. Points coming understand this are:-
- understand that the person or family determine whether the care given to them are culturally safe and respectful.
- the nurse should respect diverse culture, beliefs, gender identities, sexualities and experiences of people including team members.
- all the factors such as social, economic, cultural, behavioural and historical factors influencing health reach at individual, community and population levels.
- adopt practices that respect diversity, discrimination, and racism and challenge belief based on assumptions.
- support should be given to an inclusive environment for the safety and security of individual, family and other members.
- the nurse should create a positive and culturally safe working environment through role modelling, supporting the rights, dignity, and safety of others including people and colleagues.
Code of conduct 3.3 says about effective communication. Points coming under this are:-
- the nurse should aware of health literacy issues and take health literacy into account when communicating with people.
- make arrangements to meet specific language, cultural and communication needs of the people and their families. This should be done with the help of translating and interpreting services. The nurse should also aware of how these needs affect understanding.
- the nurse should confirm that the person and family understand all the information communicated to them.
- communicate all the accurate information about the person to colleagues within the bounds of privacy requirements.
- the nurse should be non judgemental and never treat the patient in a non professional manner verbally or in any other ways.
