Compare the management skills of clinical leaders and nursing management leaders. Should differences in scope, as well as in the qualities of the leaders, be identified, or should differences be noted only in the scope of leadership?
Clinical manager may manage a unit, division or service line. Its core role is to look after effective and efficient working of its unit or clinic. He ensures smooth functioning of his department. The manager is involved in daily tasks and activities related to patient care plan, quality analysis and improvement, goal settings and budgeting. The manager also looks after efficient working of his staff. He closely keeps an eye on their schedules and assignments, performance, professional growth and the ongoing provision of educational and career enhancement opportunities. The manager is responsible for ensuring the staff carries out all the duties and is held accountable for any grievances. The staff members want their managers to clearly communicate, give direction and support in fulfilling their roles and responsibilities. A good managers should be available, open and honest. Managers are staff source for information, advice and guidance.
Nurse leaders are more focused on setting standards, leading transformation and motivating their teams. They work to fulfill the organization’s mission, vision and strategic long-range plans.
Nurse leaders role involves policy setting and looking after quality measures; dealing with regulatory compliance, taking on fiscal responsibilities and more. They have responsibility and accountability for the overall quality of patient care delivery, patient and staff satisfaction, and organizational outcomes.
