a) Identify three barriers that prevent adolescents from choosing calcium-rich foods.
b) Classify these barriers into the conceptual model factors (macrosystem, environmental, and personal) discussed in the chapter.
c) Create a snack that would add calcium in adolescents’ diets.
d) Discuss how this new product would address the three barriers you identified. This does have to be a food that is currently in the market place.
a. Three barriers preventing adolescents from calcium rich intake are taste preference for the dairy products, parental encouragement and peer influences and availability and convenience of calcium rich foods.
b. Macrosystem barrier include the parental encouragement and peer influences
Environmental barrier includes the availabilty of calcium rich food and degree of convenience to get the calcium rich diet.
Personal barrier include the taste preferences for calcium rich food in adolescents.
c. Calcium rich smoothie- smoothie made out of almond milk and frozen/fresh banana is a rich source of calcium.
d. The almond banana smoothie is a good source of calcium. It can be prepared in just five minutes and the ingredients are readily available everywhere. This eliminates the environmental barrier of availinility and convenience. It also tastes great and thus prevents personal barrier. It containts ingredients that are good for health and do not harm the body neither are they costly. Thus eliminates macrosystem barrier.
