High levels of cholesterol in the blood are associated with higher risk of heart attacks. Will using a drug to lower blood cholesterol reduce heart attacks? The Helsinki Heart Study recruited middle-aged men with high cholesterol but no history of other serious medical problems to investigate this question. The volunteer subjects were assigned at random to one of two treatments: 2051 men took the drug gemfibrozil to reduce their cholesterol levels, and a control group of 2030 men took a placebo. During the next five years, 56 men in the gemfibrozil group and 84 men in the placebo group had heart attacks. Is the apparent benefit of gemfibrozil statistically significant? Perform an appropriate test to find out.

Too much cholesterol in the blood increases the risk of heart disease. The cholesterol levels for women aged 20 to 34 follow the Normal distribution with mean ?? =185 milligram per deciliter (mg/dl) and standard deviation ?? =39 mg/dl. a) Cholesterol level above 240 mg/dl demand medical attention. If a young woman is randomly selected, what is the probability that her cholesterol level is above 240 mg/dl? b) Find the lowest cholesterol level for the women in the top 30%...

I need answer for b) High blood cholesterol levels increase the risk of heart disease. Young women are generally less afflicted with high cholesterol than other groups. The cholesterol levels for women aged 20 to 34 years follow an approximately normal distribution with mean 185 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl) and standard deviation 39 mg/dl. a) Cholesterol levels above 240 mg/dl demand medical attention. What percent of young women have levels above 240 mg/dl? b) Among a random sample of 150...

1. Elevated levels of plasma HDL cholesterol may be associated with lowered risk of coronary heart disease. Several studies have suggested that vigorous exercise may result in increased levels of HDL cholesterol. To investigate this theory, researchers measured HDL concentrations (mg/dL) in middle-aged (35-66 years) marathon runners, as well as inactive men. The data are summarized below. (Assume equal population variances in the two groups.) sample size mean st. dev Inactive men 70 43.3 14.2 Marathon runners 70 52.8 14.3...

Cholesterol levels are measured for 15 heart attack patients (two days after their attacks) and 27 other hospital patients who did not have a heart attack. The sample of heart attack patients had a mean cholesterol level of 233.7 and standard deviation 44.9. The sample of other hospital patients had a mean cholesterol level of 206.6 and standard deviation 14.8. The degrees of freedom for the t-distribution, in this case, is df=16. The doctors leading the study think cholesterol levels...

1. High cholesterol levels are known to be a major factor in the development of heart disease. A study was conducted to compare the cholesterol levels of men and women in a similar age group. Random samples of males and females in this age group were taken from the general population and their cholesterol levels were measured. Partial results from the study are given below. Sample Size Male 80 Female 75 Sample Mean 192, 195 Sample Stdev 40.2, 37.5 (a)...

Frank- has high blood pressure. Blood pressure is affected by heart rate (higher heart rate increases pressure), vasomotor tone (more vasoconstriction increases pressure), and blood volume (we will not consider this factor in this question) Of the pharmaceutical (medication/drug) types listed below, which is/are most likely to help Frank reduce his blood pressure?
