dependent variable: total cholesterol; covariate: body mass index at baseline.
It is given that
Independent variable (X) : Mediterranean diet versus regular diet;
Dependent variable (Y): Total cholestrol;
Covariate: body mass index at baseline;
Analysis of Covariance or ANCOVA is the correct approach to be used for the given scenario. ANCOVA is a General Linear Model which is a combination of Regression and Analysis of variance (ANOVA).
Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) is a type of General Linear Model in which the independent variables is categorical in nature (Here the independent variable given is Mediterranean diet versus regular diet). Also, in ANCOVA, the influence of the Covariate - which is an observed, continuous variable is also adjusted simultaneously (Here, Covariate is given as the body mass index at baseline).
Test used:
Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) is used in studying the differences in the mean values of the dependent variables which is related to the effect of the categorical independent variables while considering the effect of the covariates.
As only 2 categories/groups are formed by the independent variable (Mediterranean diet versus regular diet), a t-test of significance of the difference in the means of the dependent variable is used here . If the computed p-value is small, then significant relationships exist.
(In case, more than 2 groups are formed by the independent categorical variable then F-test of significance is used to test main and interaction effects of categorical variables on a continuous dependent variable.
