  1. What statistical procedure is most appropriate for the following scenario?
    1. Independent variable: Mediterranean diet versus regular (no special) diet;

dependent variable: total cholesterol; covariate: body mass index at baseline.

Solutions

Expert Solution

It is given that

Independent variable (X) : Mediterranean diet versus regular diet;

Dependent variable (Y): Total cholestrol;

Covariate:  body mass index at baseline;

Analysis of Covariance or ANCOVA is the correct approach to be used for the given scenario. ANCOVA is a General Linear Model which is a combination of Regression and Analysis of variance (ANOVA).

Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) is a type of General Linear Model in which the independent variables is categorical in nature (Here the independent variable given is Mediterranean diet versus regular diet). Also, in ANCOVA, the influence of the Covariate - which is an observed, continuous variable is also adjusted simultaneously (Here, Covariate is given as the body mass index at baseline).

Test used:

Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) is used in studying the differences in the mean values of the dependent variables which is related to the effect of the categorical independent variables while considering the effect of the covariates.

As only 2 categories/groups are formed by the independent variable (Mediterranean diet versus regular diet), a t-test of significance of the difference in the means of the dependent variable is used here . If the computed p-value is small, then significant relationships exist.

(In case,  more than 2 groups are formed by the independent categorical variable then F-test of significance is used to test main and interaction effects of categorical variables on a continuous dependent variable.

Read the scenario and pick the most appropriate nonparametric statistical test (assume several assumptions of parametric tests were violated). Imagine that marketing researchers working for a food company want to determine whether children would prefer ketchup of a different color. They develop green and blue to compare to their standard red (all taste the same). They have children taste all three colors of ketchups (a correlated-groups design) and rank each on a scale of 1 – 10. Answer: A researcher...

Overview Most doctors would probably agree that a Mediterranean diet, rich in vegetables, fruits, and grains, is healthier than a high-saturated fat diet. Indeed, previous research has found that the diet can lower risk of heart disease. However, there is still considerable uncertainty about whether the Mediterranean diet is superior to a low-fat diet recommended by the American Heart Association. This study is the first to compare these two diets. The subjects, 605 survivors of a heart attack, were randomly...
