Ghana gained independence in 1957 mainly focused on the improvement of accessing education and achieve universal enrolment. There is a restructuring of primary, secondary and also introduce vocational classes. The literacy rate in Ghana according to the statistics of 2010 is 85.72 percent. There are a large number of drops out of students who came from rural areas, especially the girls. The government ensure free education for all students. The vocational and industrial based education ensures the job after their education period. The tertiary sector of education system developed form last 20 years. There are 55 universities which offer PhD. Almost 10 polytechnic institutions offer vocational education.
There is both private and public partnership can be seen in the education system of Ghana. Government is responsible to provide remuneration to teachers and also provide text books. Churches and NGOs provide basic school buildings and its structuring and furnishing. The recent development policies give access to the adult to complete their education. There is also an emergence of non formal education system to ensure the education in rural and remote areas. Giving more preference for technical and vocational education and training to eradicate poverty and reducing unemployment. Enhance equality for education in tertiary education system.
Most of the mission schools provided rudimentary teaching in primary level. There is a committee formed and it proposed several recommendations like greater supervision of government among educational institutions and also creating local advisory committees. This improve the funding level attract best calibre of people in colonial education system, equal emphasis of religious subjects, providing technical education for natives. Giving special preference for the technical and higher education improve the development of Ghanaian economy and education system also.
