Hi, 1 could you explain to me what is an emotional state based on emotional cue? 2 also how you get cultural expressions of emotion and 3 how you respond to another persons emotional state?
An emotional cue helps us to identify the emotional state of the person who expresses the cue. The cue can be a facial expression, body gesture or verbal communication with an emotional undertone. An emotional cue can also trigger the corresponding emotional state in the person who attends the emotional cue. For example, when you watch a person's face in extreme grief, you may also enter an emotional state of grief.
Even though basic emotions are universal, their expression can vary in terms of nature or intensity depending on culture. The components of emotions can be universal but the expression patterns are social constructions, that is, determined by culture. For example, Eastern cultures do not encourage extreme emotional expressions and supports a balanced expression of positive and negative emotions. In many cultures, men are not supposed to express sadness openly.
Responding to another person's emotional state first involves identifying the state of the person. A person's emotion may not always be evident in verbal communication. So one must pay attention to non verbal cues like facial expressions, hand gestures and body language. upon identifying the emotion of the other, the next step is to empathize. Only with empathy, one can communicate effectively with respect to the emotional state of the other.
