Solutions

Expert Solution

1. Converting pH=2.54 to hydrogen ion concentration, [H+].

[H+] =10^-pH = 10 ^-2.54 = 2.88 x 10^-3 M

2. What is the pH of a 7.93×10-4 molar solution of a strong acid?

pH = -log [H+] = -log (7.93×10-4) = 3.10

3. If the pH of a solution of a strong base is 8.75, what is its hydroxyl ion concentration? What is its hydrogen ion concentration?

pH = 8.75

[H+] = 10^-8.75 = 1.77 x 10^-9 M

hydrogen ion concentration =1.77 x 10^-9 M

[H+][OH-] = 1.0 x 10^-14

[OH-] = 1.0 x 10^-14 / 1.77 x 10^-9 = 5.62 x 10^-6 M

hydroxyl ion concentration =5.62 x 10^-6 M

4. What is the pH of 37.9 mM solution of HNO3? What is its pOH?

[H+] = 37.9 mM = 37.9 x 10^-3 M

pH = 1.42

pH + pOH = 14

pOH = 14 -pH

pOH = 12.58

5. Concert the hydroxyl ion concentration, 9.15 mM to pH

[OH-] = 9.15 x 10^-3 M

pOH = -log [OH] = 2.04

pH = 14-pOH

pH = 11.96

6. A 0.017M solution of HCL is mixed with a 0.017M solution of NaOH. What is the pH of the final mixture?

pH = 7

strong acid and strong base with same concentration gives pH = 7

7.

The pOH a drug solution is 6.82; what is the pH of the solution? What is the hydroxyl ion concentration is the solution is a strong base?

pH = 14 -6.82

pH = 7.18

[OH-] = 10^-6.82 = 1.51 x 10^-7 M
