How might GIS ( geographic information system) be adopted in our local (Central Florida) communities to reduce heart disease?
Heart diseases account for 3 out of 10 deaths in Florida. Americans have atleast one of these three risk factors for cardiac disease:high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking. By eliminating these risk factors we can reduce the occurrence of cardiac problems.
Many types of information can be compared and contrasted using Geographic information system
The system includes data about people, such as population, income and education level. It includes information about landscape.
It includes the data about sites of various community organizations like schools, factories, churches etc.,
It includes data in table or spreadsheet form such as population demographics. Demographics can range from age, income, literacy, ethnicity to internet browsing preferences.
It shows information about number and density like how many doctors are there in neighborhood compared with the area's population.
So by using GIS we can study the risk factors of heart diseases like vulnerable Age group, socioeconomic status, food habits, education level and phsychosocial stress among the people living in central Florida as well as culturally, linguistically and geographically isolated communities.
Community organizations like churches and community centers utilizes resources available in the community to become heart healthy. Thus GIS helps to arrange various teaching sessions to quit risk factors of heart diseases through manual as well as technologies like internet.
