What does it mean to mobilize the community?
From your personal or professional experience write one example of community mobilization?
How do health care providers’ social networks and professional associations influence clinician behavior and practices?
What are some implications of the providers’ social context in professional medical communications?
Community mobilization is a process for the betterment of a community. Here the members of a community are engaged to identify their priorities, resources, needs and its solutions in a way as to promote participation, good governance, accountability and peaceful changes. When every member of a community gets a chance to speak up or opine there is a higher likelihood that the programme accurately reflects their real needs and interests.
Community mobilization is a series of steps include, gathering the people, and raise awareness, identify resources and strengthen community participation to reach a goal.
Avahan India AIDS initiative was a focused prevention initiative funded by Bill and Melinda Gate Foundation. Here the communities are mobilized to improve HIV prevention and STI (sexually transmitted disease) control in female sex workers and transgender people. The programme contributed to increase the awareness of the risk of getting infected, health education on the myths and facts, and socio-economic support. Reaching more than 85000 Sex workers and trans genders, the programme contributed significantly to HIV prevention in high risk population in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. Health seeking behaviour in these groups increased from 5% to 70% in the first 5 year of the programme. Condom distribution increased from 6.5 million to 102 million in 6 years. An estimated 10000 HIV infections been averted.
Social networks and Professional associations are an opportunity to meet and converse with same professionals and share problems, experiences with somebody who is able to understand and help. Professional associations fights for the rights of its members and stand for the justice and protection of professionals in the work-place. The sharing of knowledge and experience among the group mates would have a positive influence on every members clinical practice. The United Nurses association(UNA) in India is having tough time fighting with the Hospital owners and the government for the better standard of life for the nurses by demanding for improved salary scale, three shift system and adequate off duties. Here the Hospital owners are under pressure and forced to accept the demand of nurses which is quite justifiable, as the nurses are even ready to go for strike by quitting duty if the association decide.
The social context of health provider does have some implications in the professional communication. The Language, culture and Health Literacy are some of the barriers of effective communications among health professionals. The growing diversity of the nation due to migration bring more health care providers into contact with patients with different languages. Effective communication is at risk in such cases. Also the cultural perception of health, sickness and medical care of patients and families may differ with that of the clinicians or organizations.
