What does it mean to someone to connect in today’s world, and how does writing facilitate those connections?
Human beings are social beings. Technology erodes the physical distance barrier and helps us to interact continuously with one another. A lot of the communication happens through writing, and sending and dealing with an influx of messages every day is now common. All of this writing is getting us together. Connecting to someone else could just sound like a nice opportunity to get your point across. But only one dimension of communication to remember is getting the point across.
We also need to sustain our relationships, both personal and working. Maybe you're making it a point for a friend who is going through a tough time to periodically text just for check in. Perhaps you are recording your progress to share with your boss at work. You may have exchanged a letter with your mates that was coming out. You can leave little notes on your partner's fridge so they know how much you love them. Maybe you jokes your colleagues for instant message to make your office a little warmer and more comfortable.
Connecting with others not only means creating new relationships, but also strengthening those you have. Over time this happens slowly. Relationships don't hold on to themselves, so using your words is a strong way of showing the much you have for yourself. It also goes a long way toward making us feel noticed and understood — and others in our lives.
