7 9 9 3 5 What is the mean, medium and mode? Is this data best described as normal, positively skewed, or negatively skewed? Justify your answer.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The sample size is n=5. The provided sample data along with the data required to compute the sample mean is shown in the table below:

X
7
9
9
3
5
Sum = 33

The sample mean is computed as follows:

Now, in order to compute the median, the data needs to be put into ascending order, as shown in the table below

Position X (Asc. Order)
1 3
2 5
3 7
4 9
5 9

Since the sample size n=5 is odd, we have that (n+1)/2=(5+1)/2=3 is an integer value, the median is computed directly by finding the value located at position 3rd, which is

median = 7

The mode is the most common observation.

Hence Mode = 9

Since the mean (6.6) is less than the median (7), the distribution is negatively skewed.
