What is the best measure of center (mean, median, or mode) for each topic? And why?
Country
Infant mortality
Health expenditure
Obesity rate
Average income
Life expectancy
Diabetes rate
Leading cause of death
Topic | Measure |
Country | Mode |
Infant mortality | Median |
Health expenditure | Median |
Obesity rate | Mean |
Average income | Median |
Life expectancy | Mode |
Diabetes | Median |
Leading cause of death | Mode |
Country is a nominal data . Nominal data means only names . For nominal data we use Mode .
Infant mortality is a skewed data , more specifically it is right skewed (long right tail) . As infant mortality is much high right after birth and it decreases gradually . For skewed data we use median .
Health expenditure is skewed data . As it contains few observation with very high values . For skewed data we use median .
Obesity rate is approximately symmetrical , so we can use mean
Average income is skewed data . As it contains few observation with very high values . For skewed data we use median .
Life expectancy is a skewed data , more specifically it is right skewed (long right tail) . As Life expectancy is much high at young age and it decreases gradually . For skewed data we use median .
Diabetes rate is a left skewed data . As for young population it is less , and increases with age. For skewed data we use median .
Leading cause of death is a nominal data . For nominal data we use Mode .
