Maintenance treatment of leukemia is controlled by the number of white blood cells. Are there other ways to control treatment in addition to counting WBC?
There are mainly two types of leukemia either they are acute or chronic....on the other hand we have to find out either it is lymphoblastic ( where neoplasms is consist of lypmhocytes) or myelogenous( where neoplasms occure due to accumulation of immature myeloblast in bone marrow)..After finding the which type of Leukemia it is become easier to start treatment..other than controlling the white blood cells count there are other treatments are present which have to be done----
A)Targeted therapy--by blocking the ability of the neoplasmic leukemic cells division and multiplication. Monoclonal antibodies are the first choice for this.
B)Radiation therapy-- where high energies of radioactive beam are used for stopping them to proliferate ferther. It being done on specific leukemic cell.
C) chemotherapy---most commonly used treatment. It only useful if there is not severe effect of leukemic cell.chemotherapy is being done by some chemical regimens. This therapy can be in various foroms like oral pill, intravenous( directly injected in vein), intrathecal( directly in CSF) also can be given subcutaneously.
D) immunotherapy--Certain drugs ( interferon, chimeric antigen receptor T cell , interleukin) to boost the immune power of the body.
E) Hematopoietic stem cell transplant therapy--By replacing the leukemic cell which are killed or destroyed by the Chemotherapy ,radiotherapy with hematopoietic cells. Here the hematopoietic stem cell are taken from patient's uneffected cell or from healthy doner. It is also similar to bone marrow transplant therapy. The new stem cell forms different types of blood cell which are needed for body. The hematopoietic stem cells have the abilities to form new healthy cells which are decreased due to leukemia.
