Determine Kc for the reaction (justify all your calculations):

½ N2(g) + ½ O2(g) + ½ Br2(g) NOBr(g)

From the following information at T=298 K

2NO(g) O2(g) + N2(g) Kc = 2.1 x 10^30

NO(g) + ½ Br2(g) NOBr(g) Kc = 1.4

Solutions

Expert Solution

1)1/2 N2 (g) +1/2 Br2 +1/2 O2→NOBr

Kc=[ NOBr]/[N2]^1/2 * [O2]^1/2*[Br2]^1/2

2)2NO →O2 +N2 ( kc1=2.1*10^30]

Kc1=[O2] *[N2]/[NO]^2

3) NO+1/2 Br2→NOBr (kc2=1.4)

Kc2=[NOB r]/[NO] *[Br2]^1/2

Kc2 / (Kc1)^1/2 ={[NOB r]/[NO] *[Br2]^1/2} / {   ( [O2]^1/2 *[N2]^1/2)/[NO] }

                            ={[NOB r]/[NO] *[Br2]^1/2} *   {[NO]/ [O2]^1/2 *[N2]^1/2}

                             =[NOB r]/ [Br2]^1/2        [O2]^1/2 *[N2]^1/2 =Kc

So   Kc2 / (Kc1)^1/2=kc

Or, kc=    1.4/(2.1*10^30)^1/2 =1.4/1.4 *10^15=1*10^15

Kc=1*10^15
