A Liquid mixture of mixture of 2‐propanol (P) and methane (M) is in equilibrium with its vapor at 65ºC. Use excel to calculate and present the system pressure and the liquid composition for vapor compositions of ym=0, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, … 0.95,1.0.

Assume Raoult’s Law and Use the following information to answer the question.
p*(kPa) and T (ºC)

Ln(p*P)=16.6796‐3640.2/(T+219.61)
Ln(p*m)=16.5785‐3638.27/(T+239.5)

Solutions

Expert Solution

p*(kPa) and T (ºC)

Ln(p*P)=16.6796‐3640.2/(T+219.61)

Ln(p*m)=16.5785‐3638.27/(T+239.5)

Ln(p*M)=16.5785‐3638.27/(T+239.5)

T = 65 ºC

Ln(p*M)=16.5785‐3638.27/(65+239.5)

                = 4.63    Pm = 2.21

Ln(p*P)=16.6796‐3640.2/(65+219.61)

= 3.88    Pp = 1.95

Ptotal = Pm + Pp

            = 2.21 + 1.95 = 4.16 mmHg

PM = ym * P Total

Ptotal = Pm/ym      This will be calculated in excel for all Ptotal values(refer to excel)

Liquid mole fraction = Xm = ym * Ptotal/Pm

                                        = 0*4.16/2.21

                                         This will be calculated in excel for all ym values(refer to excel)

As Methane and @-Propanol are in equilibrium Xm will always be 1
