conversion disorder is a somatoform disorder that has a sudden onset with neurological abnormalities. Neurological dysfunction may include, paralysis, tremors, seizures which are non epileptic , periods of unresponsiveness and difficulty in walking and swallowing. This disorder arises as part of the presence of any significant stressors. Patient does not create these symptoms intentionally, but there is usually a secondary gain associated.
Possible cause of this disease is the presence of severe stress. No organic cause has been identified. Hence the treatment plans include making the patient cope with the stress.This can be doe through training them to follow relaxation technique and cognitive behavioral therapy is also useful. Pharmacological treatment aims at treating the co-occuring medical conditions and medicines vary according to the condition.
Since the certain cause of conversion disorder is underlying stress, the treatment usually focus on relieving it.
