In this module's discussion, you will select a somatoform or dissociative disorder discussed in Chapter 5, then discuss some of the possible causes and treatments that are available. on't forget to reference your sources at the end of your initial post.
Hypochondriasis is a somatoform or dissociative disorder with the oldest history. It is the persistent fear of having a physical illness regarding certain parts of their body. This fear of having one or more physical illness is generated by their own interpretations of bodily functions, which are normal. Even though they are normal body functions, patients interpret them into abnormal acts inside or peripheral to their body.
Exact cause of somatoform disorders are not known. But there are theoretical explanations such as psycho dynamic theories pointing that narcissistic libido is causing the discomfort. Here, the erotogenic zones are relocated to the body parts where patients experience "abnormality". Another theory suggests that , as most cases of hypochondriasis is associated with major depression, and hence it can be a symptom of underlying depression.
Since there is no actual knowledge about the cause of disorder, treatment options are limited. We can provide supportive psychotherapy or Cognitive behavioral therapy to patients. This consist o continuous therapy sessions with patients to change behavioral patterns that cause additional discomfort to patient. In case of underlying depression, necessary treatment for depression are carried out.
Behavioral modification techniques such as desensitization, exposure response prevention and use of serotonin reuptake inhibitors as mediation are also in practice of treating this disorder.
