Culture plays an important role in determining various aspects of pain, experience and response. Cultural practices and spiritual beliefs forms the foundation on which many lives are based. I choose two cultural groups i.e. Chinese society and Mayan society.

  • In chinese society people usually values silence so they tolerate pain more than the Mayan society in which there is lesser tolerability and they start loud noises to express their pain.

HOW CULTURAL CHANGES INFLUENCE THE PAIN MANAGEMENT OF WOMEN IN LABOR:-

From above groups the following interventions are made according to their culture how they percieve and respond to pain.

  • As said chinese society values silence so, women who belongs to chinese society usually tolerates pain in silence and she didn't shout as according to their culture women experiencing the pain of childbirth typically believe they will dishonor themselves and their families by loud or wild response to pain. So in this case nursing care become easy as the patient is co-operative with the health care provider. Pain killers are provided after the safe delivery to provide relaxation to the patient. Hot water bag and topical analgesics ahould also use to provide relief afterwards.
  • The women of Mayan society expressed her pain by shouting loudly and become fatigue, she also get encouragement from her society with every contraction as they believe that more pain indicates the progress of labor and safe birth of newborn. In this case nursing care become a challenging task as patient don't want to be calm. Sometimes as patient is exausted and not able to bear more pain the baby get trapped inside and it become a complication. Analgesics oral or topical provided only after the delivery. Psychological support is provided and make patient calm and relax.
