oxygen therapy is the therapy used to provide oxigen according to target saturation rates to achive normal oxygen saturation for acute and chronically ill patient. There is a wide variety of devices available to provide oxygen support.Based up on the patient need ,a tolerance or a compliance problem,or a need for consistent and accurate oxygen must be considerd to select the correct oxygen delivery device. The equipments are A. Nasal cannula:(low flow system); -1 to 6L/min (24% to 43%);least restrictive B.Simple face mask; -5 to 8 L/min (40% to 60%) C.Partial rebreather mask :-8 to 11L/min(50% to 90%) D.Nonrebreather mask:-12 to 15 L/min (90% to 100%) E. Venturi mask :- delivers precise percentage of oxygen inspired
NURSING IMPLICATIONS
-Monitor the signs of hypoxia, agitation, confusion lethargy ,pallor, diaphoresis, tachycardia ,cynosis by providing oxygen therapy by standing medical order.
-monitor arterial saturation with pulse oximetry.
-maintain patient safety(by not allow smoking near patient side,or faulty electrical devices use.)
-monitor ABG values
-Provide psychological support for the patient and relatives.
-Provide humadification of O2 flow rate greater than 4 L/min to prevent drying of secretions.
-Provide proper position to the patient
Specific care:
Cannula;- care of nears with water soluble lubricant.
Rebreather mask;-ensure that bag does not deflate completely
ventury mask;-set L/min to deliver specified Fio2 (multiple sources;Mosby's 19 edition,Lippincot,iInternet serch)
