Propylene glycol ethers are derivatives of glycol ethers. These glycol ethers are a group of solvents based on alkyl ethers of ethelylene glycol or propylene glycol. These compounds are actually used in paints and cleaners. These solvents are normally have a higher boiling point , together with favourable solvent properties of lower-molecular weight ethers and alcohols.
Gererally these glycol ethers are either “e-series (ethylene glycol ethers)” or “p-series(propylene glycol ethers”) depending whether they are made from ethylene oxide or propylene oxide.
Most of the glycol ethers are soluble in water , biodegradable and few are considers as toxic.
P-series glycol ethers:( propylene glycol ethers)
propylene glycol ethers are made from propylene oxide. These are
used in degreasers, cleaners, aerosol paints and adhesives.
In these some of the derivative are propylene glycol monomethyl
ether and dipropylene glycol methyl ether.
