Propylene glycol ethers are derivatives of glycol ethers. These glycol ethers are a group of solvents based on alkyl ethers of ethelylene glycol or propylene glycol. These compounds are actually used in paints and cleaners. These solvents are normally have a higher boiling point , together with favourable solvent properties of lower-molecular weight ethers and alcohols.

Gererally these glycol ethers are either “e-series (ethylene glycol ethers)” or “p-series(propylene glycol ethers”) depending whether they are made from ethylene oxide or propylene oxide.

Most of the glycol ethers are soluble in water , biodegradable and few are considers as toxic.

P-series glycol ethers:( propylene glycol ethers)
propylene glycol ethers are made from propylene oxide. These are used in degreasers, cleaners, aerosol paints and adhesives.
In these some of the derivative are propylene glycol monomethyl ether and dipropylene glycol methyl ether.
Physical and chemical properties :
1)propylene glycol monomethyl ether:

solubility in water: soluble
relative density(water=1): 0.9620
realative vapour density(air=1): 3.11
vapour pressure(kPa): 1.6
stability and reactivity:
Air and water Reaction: Oxidizers readily in air to form unstable peroxides that may explode spontaneously
reactivity profile:

2)physical amd chemical properties of propylene oxide:
physical state and appearance: liquid
molecular weight: 58.08 g/mole
Boiling point :34.23 degree centigrade
melting point: -112degree centigrade
specific gravity: 0.83 (water =1)
vapor pressure: 442 mm of Hg (@20 degree centigrade)
solubility: soluble in cold water
stability: stable
corrosivity: Non-corrosive in presence of glass
synthesis routes of propylene glycol ethers:
1)Tunable synthesis of propylene glycol ether from methanol and propylene oxide under ambient pressure:
2)Synthesis of propylene glycol ethers from propylene oxide catalyzed by basic ionic liquids
This compound is frequently prepares from methonol and propylene reactions.
