83 protons,126 neutrons

83 protons, 127 neutrons

84 protons, 126 neutrons

_____

A. positron emission

B. alpha decay

C. this atom is predicted to be stable

D. beta decay

Solutions

Expert Solution

It is not clear that what needs to be answered in the question. Therefore I have given the concepts to solve the problem.

  1. Bismuth-209 is the "virtually stable" isotope of bismuth with  83 protons and 126 neutrons,
  • Positron β+β+ emission and electron capture is when the isotope gains more neutrons.

83 protons and 127 neutrons corresponds to positron decay.

  • During Alpha radiation an atom's proton number PP is decreased by 2 and its neutron (NN) number is decreased by 2, and we know what that means - a NEW element is formed!
  • During Beta radiation an atom's number of protons increase by 1 and the neutron number decreases by 1.Once again, NEW element!
  • Gamma decay does not change the mass or charge of the atom from which it originates.
  • The principal factor for determining whether a nucleus is stable is the neutron to proton ratio. Elements with (Z<20Z<20) are lighter and these elements' nuclei and have a ratio of 1:1 and prefer to have the same amount of protons and neutrons.
