Detroit Symetrix conducted several tests in Group decision making. In one scenario they conducted a video and then used question and answer data to facilitate decision making by identifying the problems and generating a score for the solutions. Some groups helped in preventing the discussion being dominated by a single person and hence, allow the silent members, who are quite shy, to speak out their ideas in the group. The objective to bring up key issues in the presence of senior management and even the CEO cabinet remained but received much opposition, argument and even denial of evidences placed forth. Conflicts among the group members by enabling everyone to pen down his/her thoughts about the problem and later discuss it with the entire group did reach to the consensus solution. One of the main advantages of junior level staff and middle managers to provide an equal opportunity to speak out their minds and write down their ideas and discuss with the group members.
14. Provide three examples why you would think this is a good thing for organization.
15. Provide three examples why you think this could have a negative impact to the organization.
16. If you were the CEO of the organization how would you structure these kinds of sessions?
A Thumbs Up! Would be really helpful for me. If you have any questions, please leave a comment and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
14. Examples why I would think this is a good thing for the organization:
1. It will help in providing better satisfaction to the employees. Here, we are providing an opportunity for the shy members in the group to come forward and give some ideas in the decision-making process, and thus, helping them to initiate. It would create a good impact on the minds of those employees.
2. These tests in group decision-making would help in sound and better decisions, stepwise identification of the problem, and then it's the solution. It would help in improving the organization's performance.
3. The organization can get better and creative ideas related to the improvement of the organization if everyone gets the chance to speak on the decision-making table since there would be a diversity of answers to the question.
15. Example why I think this could have a negative impact on the organization:
1. It can cause delays in decision making because it is already a long process, and now we are trying to make the silent or shy members speak, and it would ultimately impact negatively on organization, like increased costs.
2. There are chances that ideas and opinions might conflict if everybody would start to give ideas on the decision-making table, and there would be more pool of irrelevant ideas too.
3. There are chances that the final decision is not realistic. It might be difficult to score the solutions on the basis of question and answer data that is collected, the information can also be biased or unreliable. This can lead to wrong decisions that would negatively impact organizational performance.
16: how I would structure these kinds of sessions as a CEO of the organization:
I would make sure that the question and answers data used in the identification of problems and generating solutions should be relevant, reliable, accurate, and correct. And then I would conduct the decision-making process.
At the decision-making table, I would give time to every employee or group member to give his best ideas on the table by providing incentives for the same. To avoid irrelevant time consumption, I would recommend giving a specific short time duration to every person to present their best ideas in front of everyone firstly in brief, and only if asked, in detail. This would help the prevention of delays in the decision-making process.
