Biphenyl, C12H10, is a nonvolatile, nonionizing solute that is soluble in benzene, C6H6. At 25 °C, the vapor pressure of pure benzene is 100.84 torr. What is the vapor pressure of a solution made from dissolving 10.7 g of biphenyl in 34.9 g of benzene?

Solutions

Expert Solution

P = Po* mole fraction

molar mass of biphenyl = 154.21 g/mol
number of moles of biphenyl = mass / molar mass
                                                             =10.7/154.21
                                                             =0.069 mol

molar mass of benzene = 78.11 g/mol
number of moles of benzene = mass / molar mass
                                                             =34.9/78.11
                                                             =0.447 mol

mole fraction of benzene = 0.447 / (0.447 + 0.069) = 0.866

P = Po* mole fraction
   =100.84 * 0.866
   = 87 torr
Answer: 87 torr
