GINGER (plant, root)
Ginger is actually an underground stem from a tropical herb plant Zingiber Officinale. It is widely grown as a commercial crop in south and southeast Asia, tropical Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and Australia. Because of its low nutritional value and high flavor, ginger is commonly considered an herb or spice in the culinary world. The processing of ginger can also change its classification. Example, sugar-coated crystallized ginger is considered as a candy. It has been used as a spice and medicine in India and China since ancient times. The possible health benefits of ginger include relieving nausea, loss of appetite, motion sickness, and pain. The root or underground stem (rhizome) of the ginger plant can be consumed fresh, powdered, dried as a spice, in oil form, or as juice. Ginger can also be helpful to reduce the belly fat. It has an adverse affect to individuals with gallstones. The allergic reactions to ginger usually result in a rash. In addition, ginger can cause heartburn, bloating and gas. Ginger is responsible to produce clusters of white and pink flower buds that bloom into yellow flowers. Because of its aesthetic appeal and the adaptation of the plant to warm climates, ginger is normally used as landscaping around subtropical homes. Wild ginger is having an impact on the forest ecosystem. It has been found that the number of different woody seedling species was lower in areas invaded by the wild ginger.
