Summarize the Patient Bill of Rights

After reviewing your textbook and various websites, please summarize the Patient Bill of Rights and include the following: choice of treatment, consent for treatment and refusal of treatment.

1. choice of treatment:

• a patient has to receive respectful care irrespective of difference in age, sex, race, caste, religion, marital status, sexual preferences
• a patient has to receive appropriate care and information about different choices among treatment by the health care professionals
• a pateint has the right to communicate with the health care professionals specifically nurses, doctors regarding the treatment choices
• a patient has the right to make decisions or informed choices on treatment
• a patient must be free of performing those services that are not a part of the services
• a patient or resident can wear personal clothing unless infringement of rights of other inmates
• a patient is entitled to receive appropriate pain management

2. consent for treatment:

• a patient must be informed about the services available in the health care facility during the admission
• a patient must be informed about the charges applicable for each treatment delivered
• informed conset must be taken before performing any invasive procedures or surgery
• a patient must be informed about the benefits and risks associated with each treatment modalities
• a patient's significant others whom patient considers has to be allowed to inspect and if required copy the medical records in case of request within one week

3. refuse treatment:

• a patient must not be put under restraint without written order of attending physician
• a patient has the right to refuse the treatment
• a patient must be informed about the consequences of the refusal to treatment if it endangers the life of the patient
• if in case the patient refuses the treatment and if it hinders appropriate care to be delivered, therapeutic relationship must be terminated
