Human Resources performs many functions in an organization.A primary responsibility is assisting leaders and managers in recruiting and selecting future employees.While seemingly a straight forward task,'s, assessing a candidate's relevant skills,abilities,personality and intelligences, is fraught with challenges.Among these is the ability to accurately identify the candidate's job fit while minimizing the candidate's and interviewer's biases.What can HR professionals and managers do in order to limit the number of incorrect hires(false positives) and failing to hire the right candidates(false negatives).
Hiring is an art and craft of selecting best people to perform
specific role of the organisation. Organisation should be able to
select the right type of persons at right time for fulfilling its
objectives.
Hiring is an art and craft and it can't be free from
failures.
False positive occurs when hiring an applicant based on predicting
success but faiure occurs. An applicant would have succeeded is
rejected based on prediction of failure.
Hiring a false positive usually happens because:
• If roles was not defined correctly before selection process
• If hiring process was hurried to fill the vacancy of
staffs.
False negative can be due to following reasons:
• Lack of alignment between persons involved in the hiring
process
• If roles and responsibilities where not determined before
starting the hiring process.
• The hiring team may not be best for identifying the right
talent.
Good hiring team should able to distinguish between false positive
and false negative.
How to avoid false positive and false negative.
• Best selection system
organisation should have the best selection system in place to
effectively differentiate between false positive and false
negative. The false positive is costly venture which effects
productivity and morale of employees. Organisation should be able
to use better tools to picturize the talent and skill of employees
for fulfilling its objective.
• Clear expectation about the job
Explain all aspect of the job understand that whether the
candidates are fit to the job or not. Asking questions regarding
how they work on teams, individually and the way they like to be
managed will help to distinguish between false positive and false
negative.
• Dig deeper
many interviews focus the questions like why do you selected this
company , What are your strength and weakness, why should we have
you . Of course these question will helps in initial stage. But the
hiring Team should push the candidates a little more to understand
their true personality and potential capabilities.
• Another way to distinguish between false positive and false
negative is to have more than one person to review all resumes,
participate in interviews. The way the organisation can avoid
falsely eliminating a good candidate.
• Have a checklist
Having a checklist provides a consistent standard of
evaluation.
It helps to avoid making false negative or false judgement about a
candidate.
