In 1982, Hardy graduated with a bachelor's degree in forensic science. While in college he also joined the Corps of Cadets and earned a commission in the Air Force, completed pilot training, and flew C-130 tactical airlift until 1987. He left the Air Force with the rank of captain and returned to Texas. Soon he had entered the cotton farming business with his father.
