Explain how the skeleton acts as a “calcium reservoir” for the body, and the role other vitamins and minerals play in maintaining our body’s bone structure.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The skeleton is a reservoir for calcium and phosphate. 99 % of the body's calcium is present in the bone and teeth, and the other 1% is released into the tissue fluid. Calcium makes bones strong and hard and prevents them from breaking. The calcium present in the bones act as calcium reservoir for body requirements. Calcitonin is released when calcium is too high, PTH is released with the calcium is too low. The body maintains optimum levels of cakium in the blood at all times

If the dietary intake does not meet the calcium needs, then calcium is withdrawn from the bones in order to compensate for the same. This will in turn make the bones weaker and increases the risk of developing osteoporosis.

Vitamin D and calcium are vital for maximizing bone mass and reducing nsk of osteoporosis. For the healthy bone growth and the maintenance, the following nutnents are essential like Calcium and the Phosphate ions, Vitamins like A, C, and D. Calcium and phosphate ions are the most essential minerals for the bones, because bones are all made up of those minerals. Vitamin A stimulates the Osteohlasts activrty, vitamin C regulates the collagen synthesis, and the vitamin D responsible for the absorption of the calcium from the kidneys .

Calcium and vitamin D. Vitamin D is needed for the body to use calcium. An experiment is designed to study the effects of calcium and vitamin D supplements on the bones of first-year college students. The outcome measure is the total body bone mineral content (TBBMC), a measure of bone health. Three doses of calcium will be used: 0, 250, and 500 milligrams per day (mg/day). The doses of vitamin D will be 0, 75, and 150 international units (IU)...
