Health information technology
It is the processing storage and exchange of health information
electronically.
Process of implementation of health information technology and
it's challenges
- Developing standard user interface design features and function
: Poor user interface design can lead to error in data input and
functions.
- Ensuring the safety of software in an interfaced, networked
clinical environment: The entire process of developing,
implementation, and updating should be error free.
- Implementing a method for unambiguous patient identification:
Recognizing a data in two different locations or departments of the
patient is important.
- Developing and implementing decision supports safety: Computer
based clinical decision supports ' alerts' and ' reminders' to
physician which they are often ignored.
- Identifying and implementing practises to safety management IT
system transition : Ensuring the best practices to manage the
different system transitions Eg : hybrid record system
- Developing real time method to enable automated surveillance
and monitoring of system performance and safety: The system
automatically checks for drug interactions and reminds common
adverse events.
- Establishing cultural and legal framework: It is done by
creating a mandatory blame free, national or international IT
reporting system.
- Developing models and methods for patients to improve health
and IT safety : For example patient cab report diagnostic errors to
clinician or medication errors to the pharmacy can be
achieved.
