#. American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA)
Signed into law by President Obama of February 17, 2009 and otherwise known as the "stimulus plan" it is an economic stimulus plan that includes provisions for the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH).
#. Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act
a portion of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) that is meant to increase the use of an electronic health records by hospitals and physicians through a monetary incentive program.
#. Enacted in 2009 by Barack Obama > goal to save and create jobs immediately > The law directed about $150 billion in new funds to the healthcare industry.
#. Decade of HIT is 2004-2014
#. Affordable Care Act (ACA) :-
a law consisting of two pieces of legislation that are collectively referred to as "Healthcare Reform" or "Obamacare"
#. The individual laws that make up the ACA :-
1. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), enacted on March 23, 2010
2. The Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act (HCERA), enacted on March 30, 2010
#. Main objective of the ACA :-
to expand health insurance coverage to an estimated 32 million uninsured Americans and strengthen existing coverage
#. What does the ACA do :-
- increase benefits and lower costs for consumers
- provide new funding for public health and prevention
- bolster health care and public health workforce and infrastructure
- foster innovation and quality in our system
#. Electronic medical record (EMR) - records entered into a computer and electronic health record (EHR) - longitudinal electronic record of a patient > EMR belongs to 1 health care institution, EHRs do not.

An electronic record of health-related information on an individual that conforms to nationally interoperability standards & that can be created, managed, & consulted by authorized clinicians & staff across MORE THAN ONE healthcare organization
#. Electronic medical record (EMR)
An electronic record of patient health information generated by one or more encounters in any care delivery setting
#. Interoperability - connection of people and diverse computer systems.
#. Health Information Exchange (HIE) :- electronic movement of health-related information among organizations according to nationally recognized standards.
