Advertisement or the promotional messages, text, videos, audio,
and graphics among other measures are made to entice the consumers
and to provoke a positive/desirable response from them.
Advertisements may do this by highlighting how the company offering
(product or service) solves the needs of the customer. People may
have a variety of needs and these may be intense to varying degrees
as well. For instance, the consumer may require or crave
achievement, affiliation, power, domination, nurturing, autonomy,
safety, aesthetics, sensations, physiological needs (including food
and drinks), and attention among other kinds of needs.
The need for affiliation may relate to the consumer desires to be
near to, to co-operate and/or to reciprocate with others. An
individual may crave to win affection and love of another/friend
and may want to commit to another through loyalty. The need for
association and affiliation with other human beings makes for the
most appealing ads and it is also a widely prevalent need. While
most Americans are doing maximum stuff on their own and alone in
the various aspects of life, the ads may reveal what they might be
lacking privately.
An advertisement may illustrate affiliation needs. For instance, the Smirnoff Vodka ads feature intimacy between a male and female. The engrossing of the young female and male is evident, which shows the affiliation needs of the young generation today even when courting is more common and socially approved. Another advertisement that illustrates the sharing of feelings is the Johnson Baby Powder advertisement. The advertisement shows mother, father, and the baby sharing feelings of affiliation and love while being encircled in arms.
Friendship is another important kind of affiliation desire and feeling that is perceived actively by advertisers. This can be seen frequently in the cigarette ads (for instance Salem cigarette ads) or in the Maxwell House Coffee ads where women drink coffee together and confide in each other. Humans have always been regarded as social animals, and the advertisements illustrating affiliation show how the business offerings in the form of products/services may help men and women win love and affection in the social, family and friendship bonds they pursue.
