The religious book rig Vedas and three Vedas indicate that cattle slaughter was being followed but cow slaughter was not allowed.
Though the slaughter of animals for religious purposes was allowed but with the advent of Buddhism who is against the violence of any form the cattle slaying was discarded. It is also considered that Buddha might have stopped cattle slaying for economic reasons as the country is predominantly agriculture-based so cattle farming for transportation and agriculture was promoted. The Brahmans social class in India who are considered the priests also converted to vegetarianism during the Buddhist period.
