The above poem is by John Clare.
This poem mostly denotes the empty feeling that person has. The person after crisis or after joyful and negative days neither wants to have joy nor he wants to have sadness. All he wants to have is just the plain feeling.
The poem itself starts with sadness I am unknown to people, nobody cares for me. The poet is very stressed here, when he says that he is self consumer of woes which rise and vanish. This means everyday he is having some or the other kind of stress. The second stanza denotes that the poet is having empty feeling or feeling of nothingness. He doesn’t wants to experience joy or even life. His self esteem is totally low at this point of time. He is even claiming that his near and dear ones are are away from him. They have left him all alone in the sea that he claims.
He is so much desiring to have peace that he wants to go in baby position again and go back to sleep. Like baby doesn’t understands any emotion, he too wants to be the same and do not want to understand any emotion, he wants to see his life peacefully with neither joy nor unhappiness
This poem was written by John Clare when he was in mental asylum. He was into depression during this time.
