Thomas Sowell's (1987) writings from his book, A Conflict of Visions: Ideological Origins of Political Struggles, speaks to the significant differences associated with constrained and unconstrained visions.
Please take some time to consider the following - if someone retains a constrained vision, how important are cultural traditions? How does someone with an unconstrained vision view the role of cultural traditions?
And finally, why is this important to a student of critical thinking? Consider when you are interacting with another person - trying to sort out their position, beliefs, etc.
If someone has constarined vision, then it can be said that cultural traditions play an active role in the removing the constraints from the person. Cultural traditions have some inherent aspects that guides a person to look beyond their own thinking.
A person with constrained vision views cultural traditions as a bottleneck towards in progress and development of a society or a culture.
It is important for a student to critically think because critical thinking helps in developing the thinking process and helps in questioning various ongoing natural and man made processes. When interacting with a person trying to sort their beliefs and position , it is important to cosnider their stand and beliefs critically. This will help in understanding other and will also facilitate thinking from others end.
