Self-presentation has to do with the way we package ourselves for others to see. This topic is especially relevant now with the popularity of social media. There are two types of self-presentation: strategic and verification. Which form of presentation is predominant in social media? Explain and support with examples. Discuss some of the positive and negative aspects associated with social media.
The strategic form of self presentation involves an goals of self presentation as impression management on the audience. The self verification is presenting oneself to others as they percieve themselves.
The form of presentation that is most predominant in social media is the Strategic self presentation. The motives of individuals of self presentation on social media is gain approval, create good impression and popularity. Hence, they engage in strategic self presentation as self promotion, ingratiation, exemplification etc. The aim of these methods of self presentation are to be liked by others (ingratiation), to be accepted and percieved as competent, a want to be treated with respect (self promotion), to groom an image of worthiness, dedication and highly moral (exemplification). The selfie culture, posting images of one's accomplishment, supporting posts of social significance or posting such concepts etc.across the various social media platforms as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram etc are few examples of strategic self presentation. The positive side of this presentation is that it boost up the level of confidence and esteem of oneself. The negative aspect of this type of self promotion is that it encourages narcissism, such individuals develop false self esteem that could break up easily, and also, the good images of others promote low self-esteem in oneself.
