The lac repressor would be considered a

a) trans acting factor

b) integral membrane protein

c)promoter sequence

d) cis acting factor

Solutions

Expert Solution

Lac operon is found in prokaryotes and is a set of genes that regulate the expression of genes involved in Lactose metabolism. Lac operon is negative inducible system. It consists of a lac repressor, promoter, operator and 3 structural genes.

Lac repressor is produced by regulaor gene. If it is in active form, it binds to operator and do not let RNA polymerase to bind to promoter. Thus blocks the transcription of structural genes.

Lac repressor is diffusible and it is trans acting. It can turn off lac structural genes on both chromosomes.

Ans is option A.
