Management and leadership are very closely related. The management is involved with the management of the activities that fall under my control whereas leadership is a trait. Management is a skill that can be taught in a formal medium but it is difficult to inculcate leadership in a person. Hence, these two are concepts that are closely related but are very much different.
Leadership is a trait that is developed gradually over the years and is difficult to teach. Leadership can be developed and not taught whereas management can be taught and implemented in a person easily. However, the effectiveness of a manager will depend on various traits the manager must have, including leadership. Hence, all managers must show a sense of leadership for ensuring they have an effective management style whereas leadership has no requirement of managerial skills.
Management is a science whereas leadership is an art. Leadership is influential and management is efficient. Leadership has a vision through which it can direct people to do certain tasks and management is to ensure that these tasks that complete the vision of the leader are carried out effectively.
Hence, there is a thin line between management and leadership and it can be said that every manager would need some traits of leadership to be good at management but not true for the reverse situation.
