You are the coach of a HS basketball team and have just selected your team after tryouts. You believe that you have a wide range of talent and ability on the team and you want to develop the younger talent while also pushing the more experienced players. Refer to the 4-step model of coach expectations and athlete behaviors and think about how you might avoid forming (and communicating) different expectations for the different athletes. Specifically, what types of feedback would you use, how would you deliver it, and how might you structure drills to keep the athletes all feeling that you are not “playing favorites” or picking out your “star players?”

The four step model is great model the communicate to athletes about what they really need to achieve, it is the method of good communication to convey the expectations to players without any frustration. The four major points which it covers are very precise and to the point. Below are the points in brief as well as my feedback that I would provide

1) Affirm value - starting conversation by telling about positive things of players rather than negative.Hi you are a good player, your back hand shot is good, but you need to cover the court to avoid any miss of shuttle 2) Focus on the issue - Talk to the point which needs ti be improved - You need to increase your stamina, so that you are not tired easily 3) Listen for understanding - Listening to other factors which is affecting the performance for e.g. any home issues, or any other concern which player might have. What diet do you have at home, what do you eat for proteins, do you have good amount of dry fruits as well as milk and fruits 4) Gain agreement - Discuss plan for improvement, give timeline, be more of developmental nature. - Let us take 3 months from today, as after three months there would be a tournament, if your increase your stamina, cover the entire court, then we will select you to play the match.

All the above points would also bring it into notice of other people that I am not picking my favarites or star player, but I am giving opportunity to everybody.
