Adolescents in the 21st century have more opportunities than previous groups of adolescents. Some researchers argue that the 21st century is both the best and worst of times for today’s and tomorrow’s adolescents. How are today’s teens more advantaged and more challenged than previous cohorts of adolescents?
One of the most important advantages that adolescents of this generation has is the individual freedom. This would mean that today’s adolescents have the right to choose their career, choice in study, choose life partners, practice their sexuality etc. Although it was present for the previous generation, it’s very limited. Second advantage is the technological advancement which they use it for their studies, social networking, playing games etc. This technology time gives them more relief and relaxation. Thirdly, they have more entertainment opportunities compared to the previous generation. This is because of the better infrastructure and private contribution that made all the entertainment areas possible. Finally, they also have the advantage of travelling to various places and live with people from various cultures which gives them more exposure and experience thus making them very open minded.
One of the most important challenges is the same technology that consumes more time and makes them lazy. This is because of the fact that they get everything with click of a button but they get distracted and spend more time in gadgets than with people. Secondly, the diverse family environment in terms of various family types have made them vulnerable to various deviant behaviours and without proper guidance from parents, they struggle to meet the challenges in life. Finally, they have more entertainment opportunities that makes them more prone to peer pressure and pleasure than hard working and responsible. The increased amount of government support has made them enjoy their lives during their productive years and regret it later.
