Research and find an example of the police ‘code of silence’ influencing a case or situation. How do you feel the supposed ‘code of silence’ influences public opinion of police officers? Conversely, can such loyalty be beneficial or even necessary in police work? If so, how?
Code of silence refers to a person not disclosing any information regarding another either voluntarily or involuntarily in order to save that person or not put oneself in danger. This is very common among the police officers because they never disclose the wrong doings of fellow police officers or provide witness against them because they want to show their solidarity and oneness as police officers. It would have lots of adverse effects in maintaining law and order. Police officers are supposed to protect the people from criminals and uphold the law at all times. If they start to disrespect law and act as criminals, then there would be chaos and justice won't be served. People will lose their confidence on police and they would maintain a distance. This is not a right thing for a police office to do as protecting someone who has involved in criminal activities would only encourage them to do more.
