Cite the main nerve plexuses of the body and mention their territory of innervation
Answer: The main nerve plexuses of the body and mention their territory of innervation are as follows:
1. Cervical Plexus- arises from ventral rami of C1- C5. It supplies muscles to the shoulder and neck. It's major motor branch is the phrenic nerve. It innervates the diaphragm.
2. Branchial Plexus- Sub-divided into five major peripheral nerves.
a. Axillary nerve- this innervates the muscle and shoulder skin
b. Radial nerve-innervates all extensor muscles of the arm, forearm and hand and the skin along it.
c. Musculocutaneous nerve innervates the arm muscle which causes the forearm to flex as well as the skin of lateral surface of the forearm.
d.Ulnar nerve innervates the flexo carpi ulnaris muscle and all intrinsic muscles of the hand not innervated by the median nerve.
e. Median nerve - supplies most of flexor muscles in the forearm and several muscles occuring in the lateral part of hand
3.Lumbar plexus- innervates lower abdominal region, anteromedial thigh, anterior thigh muscles, lower abdomen, buttocks, skin of anteromedial leg and thigh, adductor muscles of medial thigh, small hip muscles, skin of the medial thigh and hip joint
4.Sacral plexus-innervates buttocks, postrior thigh, nearly whole of the leg and foot, lower trunk and posterior surface of thigh and leg.
it divides the popliteal region into
a. common fibular nerve that innervates the lateral aspect of leg and foot
b. tibial nerve-innervates the posterior aspect of leg and foot
